How to Customize a Dashboard Light

A customized dashboard allows the car enthusiast to show off his personality and make improvements to a vehicle that really needs little improvement. Whether it's a matter of changing the lights or placing symbols of your favorite band or pastime on the panel, a customized dash board is a fun activity that allows for individuality. Below are a few ways to customize a dashboard light and dashboard.

  • Begin by removing the plastic cover over the dashboard so you can access both the panel and the lights. Removal should be in accordance with the owner's manual. If this information is not included in your owner's manual, consult the manufacturer for instructions.

  • Replace clear bulbs with colored bulbs to add a special touch to your dashboard. Most automotive parts stores and hardware store carry these small colored bulbs and the change is simple. Be sure to use the same amp on all bulbs.

  • Consider removing small bulbs and rewiring the dashboard with track lights instead. Place track lights around the odometer and other gauges in a continuous circle to give that extra sparkle. Although easily available, you may want to consult with a car electrical expert before making the conversion.

  • Determine whether you would want to change the on and off timing of your dashboard lights. Trigger systems that tie in with the ignition, radio or car horn are available for the serious car customizer although they can be costly. Be sure the lighting stays in line with any state laws.

  • Think about replacing the original dashboard panel with one of the readily available custom panels on the market today. Some of these panels feature images from popular hobbies and music bands and often contain additional or colored lighting.

  • Keep the original dashboard and its lights safely stored in case you wish to resell your car later. Most buyers appreciate the custom touch but it is better to offer both at the time of sale. Feel no obligation to return the dashboard to original look before passing it along.
