How to Install a Snugtop Shell

Snugtop shell toppers that you can install on your vehicle can protect the bed of your truck, items you are hauling and keep the elements from affecting your goods. These shells come equipped with side, front and back windows, as well as a back end that opens and closes. One of the best features of this type of shell is that you don’t need to drill any holes in your truck to install it. All you need is some assistants, minimal tools and a half hour of your time to complete the task.

Things You'll Need

  • Snugtop shell kit
  • Socket wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Clean the top railing of your truck with a damp washcloth to remove dirt and debris. Allow the area to dry before proceeding.

  • Remove the Snugtop shell from the box.

  • Grab three to four people to help you lift the shell into place. Bring the shell to the truck with the tailgate end pointing the same direction as your truck tailgate, and line up the sides and corners of the shell with the sides and corners of the truck. Slowly lower the shell onto the truck. The rubber on the bottom of the Snugtop should sit on top of the truck rail. If adjustments need to be made, have everyone lift at the same time and readjust the position as necessary. The Snugtop is heavy, so be careful to use proper lifting techniques.

  • Get into the space under the shell and open the front shell window, if applicable. Check to make sure the rubber and shell are lined up with the front of the truck bed. Use a flashlight for a better visual inspection and readjust the shell if needed. Close the shell window and lock it into place with the window locks in the upper corners of the window.

  • Grab the Snugtop hardware that came with the shell. These will most likely be in plastic bags that you have to detach from the shell.

  • Find the holes on the inside section of the side panels of the shell. Insert the bolts that came with the shell through the top and secure them in place on the bottom with a nut. Use a socket wrench to tighten them into place until snug. Repeat this step for all holes and bolts.

  • Place the rubber nut caps over the nuts that you just installed by just pushing them in place. Do this for all nuts.

  • Remove the screws that hold your truck tail light on with a screwdriver. Connect the Snugtop shell wiring to the brake light assembly so you can get a functioning shell brake light. Tap the truck brakes to test that the shell brake light is also working.

  • Shut the shell door and try locking and unlocking it with the key provided, just to make sure it works properly.
