How to Wire a Trailer to a Ford F150

Towing a trailer behind your Ford F-150 can add to the cargo space of your vehicle, as well as adding versatility. To connect the trailer, you need a hitch. You also need some way to tell the trailer's brake lights to illuminate when the F-150's brakes turn on. To do that, you must wire the trailer to the F-150, which takes a special wiring harness. Fortunately, these are affordable and simple to install.

Things You'll Need

  • T-connector trailer wiring harness
  • Zip ties
  • Look underneath the rear bumper of the truck. Locate the gray wire harness next to the frame. Depress the button on the harness to separate the two halves of the harness.

  • Insert the T-connector trailer wiring harness between both halves of the harness. Push each half onto the T-connector, leaving you with a 4-wire lead out for your trailer.

  • Run the trailer wiring to the hitch or rear bumper of the Ford with your hands. Zip tie the wiring to the bumper and the frame to keep it in place.
