How to Install Lift Shackles on a Jeep Wrangler

Installing lift shackles on a Jeep Wrangler will increase the suspension height but may stress the springs and cause them to sag prematurely. If you seek a little extra height on your Jeep, or you wish to level the rear to the front, lift shackles can be a good, cheap solution. Lift shackles more than 1 inch high should not be used on the front of the Jeep as they become unstable from side loading when the front wheels turn.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench set
  • Raise the rear of the Jeep with a jack and position a set of jack stands under the frame to support it. Lower the jack, allowing the suspension to hang free. Locate the stock spring shackles on the rear of the leaf springs.

  • Remove the retaining nut from the rear spring hanger through the bolt with a wrench. Position a jack under the axle, raising it until it just touches the axle. Raise it just a little more to take the weight off of the spring bolt.

  • Remove the bolt from the shackle and spring eye and set it aside. Remove the nut from the upper shackle bolt with a wrench. Then slide the bolt out and remove the shackle.

  • Place the new extended shackle in place on the frame. Install the bolt and nut you removed from the old shackle. Tighten the nut with a wrench until it is secure.

  • Position the leaf spring eye into the news shackle and install the bolt to secure it. Install the retaining nut and tighten it with a wrench until secure. Move to the opposite side of the Jeep and repeat the steps.

  • Raise the rear of the Jeep off of the jack stands. Remove them from the Jeep and lower it to the ground. Recheck the nuts and bolts after driving the Jeep for several days and tighten as needed.
