How to Tow With a Scion

Scions are a brand of small cars made by Toyota. While many Toyotas have tow ratings listed in their specifications, Scion models do not. If you decide to tow a trailer with your Scion, you should research the the proper size and weight of trailer carefully. Pulling a full-size trailer is not an option. However, most small cars, including the four-cylinder Scions, can tow a tiny trailer if properly equipped.

Things You'll Need

  • Trailer hitch
  • Light kit
  • Transmission cooler
  • Tiny trailer

Preparing Your Vehicle

  • Check your warranty. Towing with your Scion may void your warranty. If you cannot find the information in your paperwork, contact the dealership or the company that provided the warranty.

  • Go to your local RV store or rental center and discuss towing with a technician. A qualified, experienced technician should have suggestions and general specifications for towing with most vehicles. Write down the towing capacity and the technician's recommended modifications to your car, including the costs.

  • Research trailers. There are many lightweight trailers available, both new and used. Very small vehicles, like Scions, should not be used to tow most trailers. However, there are lightweight and aerodynamic trailers intended for use with motorcycles and small cars. In addition, there are plans available online for home-building a tiny trailer.

  • Purchase and install a trailer hitch, light kit and transmission cooler. Generally, the hitch receiver is a Class 1 or Class 2 receiver, intended for lightweight trailers. Bumpers on cars are not made for towing, so avoid bumper hitches. Insist on a hitch that is attached to the frame of your vehicle.

Towing With Your Scion

  • Attach the trailer to the hitch. Lift the trailer and set the coupler on the ball. Make sure it sits completely down onto the ball. Trailers have either screw-type locking mechanisms or connectors that pull back and then slip forward and down, locking onto the ball. Tighten or lock the connector to the ball.

  • Attach the safety chains to your Scion. The safety chains should cross underneath the trailer hitch and attach to the brackets on each side of the hitch, under the car. Adjust so they are loose but not dragging on the ground.

  • Plug the lights in. With a helper, test each function of the lights, making sure that the turn signals, brake lights and taillights all work properly.

  • Practice driving, parking and backing up with the trailer. Adjust your mirrors so you can see the lanes on both sides of your car and trailer. Use caution. Allow extra room for braking and stopping.
