How to Change Square Jeep Headlights to Round Ones

The square headlights that are factory issue on many Jeeps may not appeal to you. Fortunately, they can be changed to normal round headlights with a conversion kit. Conversion kits are primarily available from aftermarket online auto parts warehouses. Changing your headlights is normally done purely for aesthetic reasons and can become somewhat expensive--depending on the make and model year of your Jeep.

Things You'll Need

  • Jeep headlight conversion kit
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Open your hood. Use a socket wrench to loosen the retaining nut on the cable clamp connected to the negative battery terminal. Slide the negative cable clamp off the battery terminal.

  • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the retaining screws on the headlight housing assembly. Slide the housing assembly forward.

  • Unplug the power connector running to the back of the headlight housing assembly and remove the housing assembly.

  • Unscrew the screws holding the front grille of your Jeep in place. Pull the grille off the front of the Jeep using a screwdriver.

  • Install the replacement grille and secure it with the factory retaining screws. The grille normally comes as part of the conversion kit because you will need a new grille to make sure that the headlight housings fit properly.

  • Install the new round headlight housing assemblies and secure them with the factory mounting screws.

  • Reconnect the battery cable clamp and tighten the retaining nut with a socket wrench.
