How to Install a Bug Shield

Bug shields keep bugs from getting stuck on your vehicle's hood and destroying the paint job. A shield can also keep rocks and other debris from coming up and hitting your hood, possibly chipping off the paint. Learn how to easily install a bug shield with these steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Bug shield
  • Alcohol rub
  • Marking pencil
  • Wash your vehicle before installing the bug shield. Wash the area along the front of the hood where the shield will be installed if you don't want to wash the entire vehicle.

  • Dry the front of the hood where the shield will be installed. The shield will not stick to a wet surface.

  • Wipe the area on the front of the hood with an alcohol wipe. This is usually supplied with the bug shield. This will clean the surface completely, and leave it dry and ready for adhesive.

  • Position the bug shield exactly where you want it on the hood of the vehicle. Make a mark on each side so you will know where to stick the shield.

  • Remove the adhesive from the tape on the back of the shield. Place the shield on the hood between the marked lines. Push along the shield to make sure the adhesive sticks along the entire edge of the hood.

  • Install the rubber bumpers behind the shield where it touches the hood. This will stop the bug shield from rubbing the paint off the hood.
