How to Add a Tow Package

A tow package can consist of a trailer hitch or tow bar, the hitch receiver, hitch mount, hitch ball and the wiring to get the vehicle and the trailer connected. A tow package is something that can be added to a vehicle at any time. You can put a tow package on both new and used vehicles. You can even take care of it on your own, if you are so inclined. Prices for tow packages and the specific components vary by vehicle make and model.

  • Negotiate it into the purchase price, if you are buying a new vehicle. Typically auto dealers offer tow packages as optional packages that you can add onto a vehicle. If no vehicles are currently on the lot with an already installed tow package, you have to leave the vehicle with the dealer to get it installed. The installation time and added cost varies.

  • Take your vehicle to the local dealer to inquire about getting a factory installed tow package added onto the vehicle. You must go to the dealer that matches the make of your vehicle. For instance, if you have a Ford F-150, you must go to a Ford dealership. The price you will pay for the package to be added will vary. The dealer may not have the tow package kit in stock, so you may have to return to have it installed later.

  • Purchase a towing hitch and accessories from another vendor, such as Hitch Source or U-Haul. You can install it yourself, if you are comfortable doing so, or have it installed by a professional. For example, U-Haul offers installation for an additional fee. If you want to do it yourself, instructions are typically included with the equipment.
