Instructions on How to Install an RCI 5 Point Harness

A 5-point harness, as the name implies, is a racing harness that has five straps. There are two shoulder straps, two lower body straps and an anti-submarine belt that goes between the driver's legs and bolts to the floorboard. Five point harnesses are used most commonly on race cars or cars that are used primarily for track days. They provide additional safety in case of an accident and also hold the driver firmly in place so they can better focus on actually driving the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Determine where the anti-submarine belt will be installed. This will be just in front of the seat. Make a mark in the floor board in the center of the seat. Drill a hole for the bolt with an electric drill. If the vehicle has carpeting, the carpet will need to be pulled back. A hole will then need to be cut for the bolt to go through.

  • Route the belt through the hole in the bottom of the race seat if such a seat is being used. Bolt the fastener on the end of the belt to the floor with the supplied bolt. Use a backing plate on the bottom of the car where the nut installs onto the bolt. Tighten the nut and bolt with a socket.

  • Install the side belts. These may be installed in the holes that the stock seat belt install into. Remove the stock seat belt. Install the racing harnesses belts with the supplied hardware. If the car has a race seat, route the belts through the harness slots in the lower sides. If for some reason you cannot use the stock mounting holes, new holes will have to be drilled on either side of the seat. Install the belts in the same manner as Step 2 once the holes are drilled.

  • Install the shoulder harnesses. If the car uses a race seat, route the harnesses through the harness slots. If there is a roll bar in the car that has a horizontal bar in the proper spot, wrap the harness around the bar and tighten it. If there is no roll cage or any place to install the belts onto the cage, holes will need to drilled in the rear area of the car. Bolt the fasteners onto the holes and tighten the nut and bolt. Use backing plates where the nut installs to reinforce the mounting point. Adjust the lengths of the harnesses to fit the driver.
