How to Get More Throttle Response in a Mustang GT

The Mustang GT has been produced since the 1960s. The GT has factory installed performance enhancements to help it produce more horsepower and torque than standard Mustang models. You can improvie the Mustang GT's throttle response with basic maintenance, performance tunes and bolt-on accessories. Sluggish throttle response is typically due to worn or dirty components.

Performance-Enhancing Maintenance

  • Replace dirty fuel and air filters, spark plugs and fuel injectors. Dirty fuel filters restrict available fuel during rapid consumption. Poor fuel pressure will significantly reduce throttle response. Clogged air filters reduce the volume of available air for combustion. Worn spark plugs and injectors will result in inadequate combustion.

  • Spray the mass air flow sensor, or MAF, with MAF cleaner. The mass airflow sensor measures the incoming air and allows the engine to compensate with injection timing and fuel volumes. Dirty MAF sensors contribute to poor intake volumes.

  • Clean the throttle body intake or carburetor . Remove the air intake tube or filter from the throttle body or carburetor. Clean the throat of the air intake path. Carbon deposits and blow-back from combustion will dirty the intake, slowing the consumption of air. Fuel injected engines will experience greater throttle response when the throttle body is clean.

  • Remove weight from the Mustang's cabin and trunk. Unnecessary weight reduces the response of the vehicle during rapid acceleration.

Throttle Response Improvements

  • Performance tune your Mustang GT. For modern ODB-II reader installed vehicles, performance tuning can be done through handheld devices or software programs. Connect the ODB-II enabled tuner to your vehicle and load pre-installed tunes or custom tunes to your vehicle. Custom tuners will alter the settings of your on-board computer while it is in use, resulting in optimal settings. Throttle response can be significantly reduced through modification of fuel-trims, shift points and other optimizations.

  • Install a new cold-air uptake kit or upgrade your existing one. You can replace the stock air filter with one that allows greater volumes of air into the engine while also blocking engine compartment heat. This will give the car more available power. Cold-air intakes allow denser, cooler air into the engine, which in turn leads to an increase of power during the combustion process.

  • Install a performance exhaust, if your GT is not already equipped. Performance mufflers and pipe designs allow the GT's engine to expel more exhaust gas during operation. The more efficient design can increase the horsepower and low-end torque by as much as 10 percent.
