How to Increase the BHP of a Car

BHP, which stands for brake horsepower, is the amount of horsepower a car engine can produce without any auxiliary components and it is measured at the output shaft. BHP is different from wheel horsepower, also known as true horsepower. Wheel horsepower represents the amount of power generated at the wheels of the vehicle. Increasing the BHP will also result in a power increase at the wheels, assuming power is not lost through drivetrain components.

  • Improve airflow. Allowing the engine to breathe freely will result in an increase in BHP. Improving the airflow can be done by installing a new intake, headers and exhaust system.

  • Reprogram or remap the Electronic Control Module. A number of aftermarket solutions are available for reprogramming a car's ECU, which will adjust the air/fuel ratios and shift points. The result will be an increase in power.

  • Install forced induction. Adding a supercharger or turbocharger to the engine can create a large amount of additional power.

  • Install nitrous oxide. Several different types of nitrous oxide systems are available, which will temporarily increase the BHP of the car's engine.
