How do I Improve the Performance of an Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Twin Spark?

The Alfa Romeo 156 Twin Spark was produced between 1998 and 2002 before being replaced by the 156 JTD. Delivering an exceptional 165 bhp, the 156 2.0 Twin Spark is already a top performer. However, there are still modifications that you can make to the engine, clutch and brakes to further improve performance.

  • Fit a cold air intake. Factory fitted air intakes do not provide engines with the optimal level of cold air; however, a performance cold air intake will give you a significant performance boost and gas mileage improvement.

  • Install a stage two performance chip. A stage two performance chip will give you an extra 20 to 40 bhp, and will generally cost less than $200.

  • Consider new wheels. The wider your wheels, the greater road grip you will have. Improved handling performance is fundamental when considering performance upgrades.

  • Fit a performance clutch. After serious engine tuning, your standard clutch may struggle to cope with the extra power. A factory fit clutch will be designed for a standard car and therefore you will need to upgrade it to handle your performance car.

  • Install performance brakes. Slowing down is just as important as speeding up, and as with the clutch, you will need more stopping power in your Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Twin Spark.

  • Install a turbo. This is the ultimate performance improvement and will give your 156 some serious power. The downside is that this is an expensive modification. The performance gains will depend on the size of the turbo and the quality of the components.

  • Use premium grade gas. If you use low octane gas in a performance engine you will lose any benefits from the modifications.
