Superchargers are one of the best ways to give a car or truck a boost in power without having to replace the engine or perform other major upgrades. Like turbochargers, superchargers force extra air into an engine, causing it to produce more power with less fuel. Nissan has offered superchargers on several of its trucks and SUVs while aftermarket auto tuners have superchargers for Nissan models such as the 350Z and 370Z.
The biggest advantage of using a supercharger on a Nissan is the added power. Most superchargers increase horsepower substantially while allowing the engine to run at the same RPM and consume the same amount of fuel, or even less, as it would without the supercharger. Replacing a Nissan stock engine with a larger engine would have a similar effect on power but would likely reduce fuel economy.
Despite adding power to a Nissan's engine, superchargers also cost the vehicle power. This is because superchargers are mounted to the engine's crankshaft and receive power directly from the engine. While the power needed to operate the supercharger is less than the amount it adds, this is still an important factor when deciding whether or not a supercharger is the best option for increasing power in a particular vehicle.

Superchargers also require periodic maintenance, which means a long-term cost as well. Drivers should look into other performance modifications before deciding if a supercharger is necessary or worth the cost. At the same time, superchargers are almost certain to cost less than a replacement engine. When these two options are under consideration, the supercharger's cost may actually be a benefit.
Adding a supercharger to an existing engine can be a challenge in terms of finding room in the engine compartment.
