How to Replace the Remote Key for a Chevy Truck

If one of the keyless entry remotes for your Chevy truck has stopped working, or if you've lost it, you can purchase a replacement remote and program it yourself. There are several online retailers you can purchase a remote from; however, not every Chevy remote is compatible with Chevrolet trucks. Therefore, it's recommended to purchase the replacement remote from a Chevrolet dealer; this will ensure the remote is compatible with your Chevrolet truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement remote key
  • Visit a Chevrolet dealer to purchase a new remote. Write down your 17-digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) found at the base of the windshield, or on your vehicle registration. This will ensure you obtain the correct remote.

  • Insert your key and turn it to ignition position two ("Acc"). Press the "I" button on your dash information center until "Relearn Remote Keys" is shown on your odometer display.

  • Press the check mark button on your information center; the display will change to "Relearn Remote Keys Active."

  • Press and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the replacement remote, until you hear a warning chime (this takes approximately 15 seconds).

  • Repeat step four on each remote you want to program to your Chevy truck. If you had a remote programmed before adding the new one, you'll need to reprogram it at this time.
