How to Improve Vehicle XM Radio Reception

XM Radio is delivered through a satellite signal. Reception is different from FM or AM radio; the receiver requires line-of-sight to the satellite—it will not work in tunnels as FM radio does, and it won’t work in underground garages. Interference from other signals, including FM stations, can cause problems, too.

  • Ensure all of the cables are connected securely if you experience audio fading or static.

  • Ensure you are tuned to an open FM channel. Use your XM Radio user guide to find an appropriate FM channel to use. The FM band in cities is crowded; you may do better to hard-wire your XM receiver.

  • Ensure your antenna is placed on the roof and not on a trunk lid or a fender. A roof-mounted position gives maximum line of sight to the satellite.

  • Ensure the cable running from the receiver to the antenna isn’t kinked or broken. Don’t cut satellite antenna cables—they are optimized. Reduce any severe bending or multiple changes in direction.

  • Try another channel. The one you’re trying to receive may be off the air.
