How to Install a Tundra Brake Controller

The Toyota Tundra is capable of carrying large loads in the bed as well as behind it on a trailer hitch. The heavier the load in the trailer, however, the more difficult it can be to stop. The use of a trailer with brakes and the installation of a brake controller can help. This lets you control how much the brakes pull on the trailer, making it easier to tow. Installing a brake controller should take about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Brake controller kit
  • Drill
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Zip ties
  • Open the driver's door and sit in the driver's seat. Hold the brake controller in the bracket along the flat bottom edge of the dashboard and find a place to mount it so that it doesn't interfere with your driving position. Remove the bracket from the controller and then install the bracket to the dash with a pair of self-tapping screws and the drill.

  • Look underneath the dashboard near the kickpanel. Locate the empty white plug hanging from the dash near a large metal bracket. Screw the white ground wire from the brake controller's harness into the metal bracket with a self tapping screw and the drill, then plug the brake controller's harness into the white plug with your hands.

  • Run the remaining section of the brake controller harness into the mounting bracket, then plug it into the backside of the brake controller. Install the brake controller into the bracket with the Phillips screwdriver. Secure any excess wiring to the underside of the dash with the zip ties.
