How to Hook Up a Trailer Brake Controller on the Jeep Commander

The Jeep Commander is a four-wheel-drive full-size SUV produced by Daimler Chrysler in 2006 and 2007, and by Chrysler Group LLC between 2008 and 2010. Although its size and wheelbase make the Jeep Commander a competent tow platform, it was not delivered with a factory-installed harness to hook up a trailer brake controller. A small number of connections, properly called hard-wiring, must be made to the preexisting loom to hook up a trailer brake controller on a Jeep Commander.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire strippers
  • Soldering kit
  • Shrink-wrap insulation kit
  • Cable splice
  • 20-amp fuse (optional)
  • Locate the wire from terminal two of the round seven-pin trailer hitch. Although convention suggests that this wire should be color-coded blue, Chrysler uses a green wire for this purpose. The dead tail is located beneath the dash, behind the fuse box, taped to the wiring loom serving the fuse box. Release the green wire from the tape, use wire strippers to trim away a half inch of the insulation, do the same to the blue wire from the trailer brake controller and twist the two wires together. Make the join with a soldering kit, and insulate with a shrink-wrap kit.

  • Use a cable splice to connect the red wire from the trailer brake controller to the switched white-with-tan-pinstripe wire attached to the brake pedal micro-switch; find the micro-switch near to where the brake pedal pivots.

  • Route the black wire of the trailer brake harness directly to the positive terminal of the battery; the wire should have an inline fuse holder fitted and have a 20-amp fuse.

  • Route the white wire of the trailer brake harness directly to the negative terminal of the battery.
