How to Remove the Headrest From a 2007 Cobalt

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt has headrests, which are also known as head restraints, for each seat. These headrests provide additional comfort and a level of safety for the driver and passengers, offering protection against whiplash in the event of an accident.

The procedure for removing the front headrest from a Cobalt is different from that of removing a rear headrest, but each process is the same for all Cobalt models from 2005 through 2009.

Things You'll Need

  • Straightened paper clip or precision screwdriver (front)
  • Flat-head screwdriver (rear)
  • Socket wrench (rear)

Removing the Front Headrests

  • Push the plastic tab on the outer headrest post. While holding the tab, pull up on the headrest to raise it.

  • Examine the post closest to the center console on either side. You will see a tiny hole on the base of the post.

  • Insert a paper clip or precision screwdriver to release the internal clip. Pull the headrest up to remove it.

Removing the Rear Headrests

  • Inspect the rear edge of the headrest to find the plastic cover. Pry up the cover with a flat-head screwdriver.

  • Remove the two bolts behind the cover with a socket wrench.

  • Lift the headrest up to remove it.
