How to Remove Front Seat Headrests

The headrests on the front seat of your vehicle are used to restrain your head in the case of an accident. However, there are also occasions when you might have to remove the headrests, such as if you want to reupholster the seats or if you want to install entertainment monitors in backs of the headrests. The process for removing a front headrest varies depending on your vehicle model, but there are some general rules to look for which will make the job easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Hex-head key set
  • Sit backwards in the front seat so you are facing the headrest. Grip the headrest on both sides and lift it firmly up until it extends all the way. If it lifts out of the seat, then stop. If not, proceed to the next step.

  • Look for a small hole in the base of the headrest, located in the plastic cap on the top. Insert a hex head key into the hole and apply pressure while simultaneously lifting on the headrest. If it comes out of the seat, then you're done. If not, proceed to the next step.

  • Look for a button on the plastic base at the top of the seat, underneath the headrest. Lift up on the headrest while pushing in on the button to release the headrest from the seat.
