How to Remove the Transmission Shifter Knob on a Toyota Pickup

Shifter knobs on Toyota pickups can be replaced with aftermarket knobs, whether for a simple upgrade or to replace a chipped or broken knob. Aftermarket knobs are a way of customizing your vehicle and can even raise the value of your vehicle since the interior appearance is important for resale value. Removing the transmission shifter knob in Toyota pickups requires only basic tools and five to 10 minutes of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Start your vehicle and depress the brake pedal. Slide the shifter knob to the setting closest to the rear of the truck. This will help you access the shifter's mounting assembly. Engage the parking brake then shut off the pickup.

  • Locate the mounting shaft on the back of the knob. This will be located at an angle, pointing back towards the rear of the vehicle.

  • Slide a Phillips head screwdriver into the mounting shaft to remove the mounting screw at its end. Be careful not to strip the screw as you will have to use it to install the replacement knob.

  • Twist the knob counterclockwise to remove it from its mount. If the pickup is an older model, the knob may be stuck on. Don't be afraid to use some force to get the knob loose.

  • Remove the small washer at the bottom of the shifter shaft. This will be replaced with one supplied with the new knob.
