How to Remove a Drivers Seat

Whether your old driver's seat needs upholstery or you just want to swap it out for a new model, the first thing you have to do is remove the seat assembly itself from the chassis. Fortunately, on most vehicles, taking out the factory seats is a fairly easy task, and can be accomplished by anyone with just a few tools. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Lean down on your side and locate the four bolts that hold the seat to the floor. Unbolt the seats using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and place the bolts to the side.

  • Tilt the back of the seat forward using the back lever on the base of the seat to allow you to remove the seat.

  • Pick up the seat using the back and the base as a grabbing point, and lift out the seat using your legs and not your back. Place it out of the vehicle and out of your way.
