How to Install a Car Seat Belt Extender

Overweight individuals may find their new car seatbelt to be uncomfortable or binding. Instead of suffering the discomfort, or driving in an unsafe manner, install a universal seat belt extender. These car seat belt extenders are easy to install in any car or truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Universal car seat belt extender
  • Seat belt extender hardware
  • Adjustable wrench

Install a Car Seat Belt Extender

  • Purchase a universal car seat belt extender from one of several online sources such as Wesco Performance or JC Whitney. These come in 6-inch and 12-inch varieties. Choose the type that will create the best seat belt fit for you. Be sure the seat belt extender comes with all necessary hardware such as nuts and washers.

  • Locate the end of the seat belt in your car that is attached to the door frame or the seat. This is not the retractable end of the seat belt, but instead a solid mount end. It should be attached with a bolt and nut assembly.

  • Remove the nut and washer from the solid seat belt mount bolt using an adjustable or fixed-size wrench. Put the bent end of the seat belt extender onto the bolt and replace the washer and nut. The bend should make the seat belt extender move away from the wall of the car where the bolt comes out. Tighten the nut well.

  • Push the bolt included with the seat belt extender assembly through the other, flat, side of the extender. Then, put it through the metal part of the existing car seat belt. That is the part that was previously attached to the bolt on the car frame. The bolt should be positioned with the flat head side facing in toward the seat. This will prevent scratches or damage to the car seat or the driver's clothing.

  • Position the washer onto the bolt going through both the seat belt extender and the seat belt itself. Screw the nut tightly onto the bolt with the adjustable wrench. The seat belt extender is now installed in your car.
