How to Substitute Rims for a Triumph Spitfire

The Triumph Spitfire is a small, four-cylinder powered convertible that was made in England. Today, thanks its age, the Spitfire falls into the category of classic sports car. As originally equipped the Spitfire came with very small steel wheels with trim rings. It is possible to install different wheels on one of these cars, but the wheels have to remain relatively small since the Spitfire itself is a very small car. Generally speaking, it is difficult to fit a wheel that is larger than 14x6-inches on this particular model. The wheel lug pattern of the Spitfire is 4x95.2 mm and the factory offset is 22 mm.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Purchase your wheels. There are several companies that sell wheels for the Spitfire, including Moss Motors (see Resources 1). eBay (see Resources 2) can be another place to source Spitfire wheels. Or you can google search for other independent sellers.

  • Have tires mounted by a professional tire shop. Whenever installing new tires, they should be mounted and balanced by a tire professional, since this takes special equipment.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on the existing wheels with a lug wrench. Jack up the Spitfire with a floor jack and lower it onto a jack stand. You can either replace one wheel one corner at a time or jack up the car at all four corners and replace all simultaneously.

  • Finish removing the lug nuts and the wheel. Set the wheel aside. Wipe down the hub surface where the wheel mounts with a rag. Slide the new wheel and tire onto the hub and tighten the lug nuts. Repeat for the remaining corners of the car. Run your hand behind the wheel to make sure that it is not making contact with the brake or suspension components.

  • Lower the Spitfire back to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts on the wheels to 38 to 49 foot-pounds of torque with a torque wrench. Recheck the torque of the lug nuts after the vehicle has been driven 50 to 100 miles.
