How to Lift a Car to Fit Big Rims

One of the most common upgrades for many cars that are customized by their owners is the installation of larger wheels and tires, often much larger wheels and tires. Installing a larger wheel and tire package is basically the same as installing a stock-sized wheel. However, if the new wheel is extremely tall (for example, a 22-inch or larger wheel), it may be difficult to lift the vehicle high enough to install the wheel. Accomplish this with an SUV jack that lifts the vehicle higher than a standard jack, with taller jack stands.

Things You'll Need

  • SUV/truck floor jack
  • Tall jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface. Place the vehicle in gear or in park if it is an automatic, and set the emergency brake.

  • Loosen the lug bolts on the existing wheels with the lug wrench. Place the pad of the floor jack under the appropriate jacking point. This will vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

  • Lift the vehicle with the jack as high as the jack will go. Slide the jack stand under the vehicle in the appropriate area. Slowly lower the floor jack so that the vehicle lowers onto the jack stand and is safely and securely supported.

  • Remove the lug nuts and then the remove the existing wheel. Slide the new wheel and tire onto the hub. Tighten the lug nuts by hand. Lift the vehicle with the floor jack, pull the jack stand out of the way and then lower the vehicle to the ground.

  • Tighten the lug bolts to the appropriate setting with the torque wrench. Most vehicles use a lug bolt torque setting of around 89 ft/lbs but you should check the owner's manual for the appropriate torque setting.

  • Repeat the above steps for the remaining corners of the vehicle, removing and replacing the wheels one at a time.
