Why Stagger Wheels on a Mustang

One of the first aftermarket modifications a new Ford Mustang owner likes to do is upgrade those stock sixteen inch rims to ones that allow for a wider tire, a lower profile and a staggered look.

Aggressive Stance

  • Using staggered rims will give a more aggressive stance to a Mustang. The most common stagger is a set of nine-inch front rims and ten-inch rear rims. This makes the rear wheels stick further into the wheel well giving the car a ‘drag car’ look.

The Muscle Car Look

  • Many people use deep dish staggered wheels because they gives the illusion that the rear axe of the car is shorter and that the wheel hub is set further under the car. This effect makes a Mustang resemble an early 1960’s muscle car.

Higher Handling Performance

  • Using off set rims on a Mustang will help to increase cornering performance because the car’s stance is wider in the front and rear. Standard rim width on a Mustang is seven inches. Upgraded rims add two inches to the front rims and three inches to the rear rims.

Wider Rear Tires

  • Staggered rims give you two extra inches in rim width on the rear of the car. The stock tire on a Mustang is just over seven and a half inches wide. A ten inch rim can hold an eleven inch tire which will help your Mustang hook up with the pavement on hard launches.

Softer Ride

  • Upgrading rims usually means upgrading to larger diameter rims and upgrading to twenty inch rims means you must use low profile tires. Using low profile tires will decrease the ride comfort because there is less air to cushion the ride. Using staggered rims increases tire width and in turn improves a Mustangs ride quality.
