Back at the dawn of the pickup truck, Henry Ford proved that customers would buy a versatile, compact pickup that drove like a car when it wasn't hauling cargo. GM might have largely gone down the "bigger is better" path since then, but the excellent little S10 and its GMC Sonoma cousin have rolled into history proving that sometimes, the first ideas are the best ones.
Two-wheel-drive S10s came with either 205/75R15 or wider 215/65R15 tires. The 1997 S10's original equipment tires are no longer in production, but as of 2013, Tire Rack lists the Fuzion SUV as the most popular replacement street tire for the 205-series tire, and the General Grabber AT2 as the most popular off-road tire. Buyers replacing the old 215-series tire tend to prefer the General Altimax RT, Sumimoto touring LS T or Sumimoto HTR A/S P01 performance tire.
Four-wheel-drive trucks came with the same 205/75R15 tires as two-wheel-drive models in standard form, but Chevy offered an off-road package with wider and taller 235/75R15 tires. The General Grabber is the most popular replacement tire for four-wheel-drive models with the smaller tires. Counterintuitively, Tire Rack reports that buyers seeking to replace the larger off-road tires often switch to a same-sized street tire like the Fuzion SUV or Kumho Solus KR21.
