Car Waxing Tips

Waxing your car is an easy way to make it shiny and make it look new. When people think of waxing their vehicles, they typically think of using a product like Turtle Wax, to bring out the shine of their car's paint job. While washing and simply waxing your car is a fine way to achieve decent results, there are a few other tips that can make your vehicle look like it just came off the showroom floor.

Getting Started

  • Begin the process by selecting the wax you'd like to use on your vehicle. Turtle Wax or Meguiar's are always good products that can be purchased at reasonable prices. If you have scratches on your vehicle, you may also want to purchase a polish or compound. Again, Meguiar's makes these sorts of products, as does Turtle Wax. Both lines can be purchased at places like Wal-Mart, Target, or your local auto parts store.
Wash your vehicle thoroughly before you apply the wax. Applying wax to a dirty vehicle can result in the paint being scratched by dirt on the car. Work in an area that is well shaded. If you work directly in the sun, the wax will dry quicker and be difficult to remove. In addition, streaking and hazing can occur.

Wax On, Wax Off

  • Apply a thin coat of wax to the vehicle using the applicator provided. Use short, circular motions to put the wax on the vehicle. Allow the wax to dry completely before attempting to remove it. Failing to allow proper drying time will result in hazing and streaks. Plus, the wax will be difficult to remove.
Use a terry cloth towel to remove the wax. Apply firm pressure to the towel when wiping the wax off. An even better method for removing wax and getting the ultimate shine from your paint is to use an electric buffer to remove the wax. The buffer will smoothly remove the wax, leaving behind an unmatched luster.

Making It Shine

  • Use a spray bottle to mist the wax if you notice that an uneven shine is occurring. Spritzing the area with water and buffing will give the vehicle a uniform shine. To get ultimate shine results, use synthetic wax, then layer with caranuba wax. The caranuba will add liquidity and depth, while the synthetic will act like a layer of gloss.
