How to Make Your Own Caffeine Lotion

The invigorating properties of caffeine aren't only used in your morning coffee or soft drinks. In fact, the benefits can be used to make a smooth and uplifting body lotion. The antioxidants in caffeine lend to its use in fighting wrinkles, puffy under-eye circles and dull-looking skin. Making your own homemade lotion using caffeine gives you the ability to rely on your own natural ingredients for optimal skincare.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 2-qt. glass bowls
  • 1 tbsp. borax
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp. botanical butter
  • 1 tbsp. beeswax
  • 5 drops essential oil of coffee bean
  • Hand mixer
  • 10 oz. plastic jar
  • Pour 2 cups of water into one of the 2-qt. glass bowls. Stir in the borax. Borax is a natural ingredient that also serves as an emulsifier that bonds water and oil ingredients.

  • Add the botanical butter to the bowl of water and borax. You can purchase botanical butters at craft supply stores. They vary immensely and different butters have different benefits. For example, hemp butter is rich in proteins and avocado butter possesses natural sunscreen capabilities.

  • Microwave the bowl for three minutes or until the water is hot and the butter has melted into it thoroughly.

  • Microwave a separate bowl containing the beeswax until it is melted into a clear liquid.

  • Mix the bowl of hot water and oil with the electric hand mixer on a low setting. Slowly drizzle the melted beeswax into the water, borax and butter solution. Beat the mixture for five continuous minutes. As you do this it will form into a frothy white liquid with the consistency of that close to pancake batter.

  • Add the coffee bean essential oil to the frothy lotion mixture as you mix it continuously. Coffee bean essential oil is the distilled essence of coffee beans; it contains caffeine and a light scent of coffee bean. Mix the solution for an additional two minutes.

  • Pour the warm, frothy lotion mixture into the plastic lotion container. Leave the cap off until the lotion cools to room temperature. When it cools, it will thicken into a lotion that is soothing to the skin and gives you the benefits of caffeine.
