How to Remove Scratches From a Car Body

You don't need to go to a professional body shop to removing a car scratch. Household items such as dish soap, water and a rag or towel can help remove all traces of the scratch. Just be sure to remove the scratch early to prevent rust from forming and lessen the chance of the scratch widening.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Bucket
  • Sponge or chamois
  • Cloth
  • Scratch remover
  • Foam pad
  • Mild abrasive
  • Mix one-half teaspoon of dish soap into a bucket of water. Dip a large sponge or chamois into the bucket. Squeeze out excess water and gently rub the sponge over the scratches on the car. Do not scrub too hard. This can cause further damage and leave traces of the sponge in the scratch.

  • Rinse the area with cool water after sponging the car to remove all of the soapy water and give a clear view of the scratch. Take a clean cloth and pat the area dry. Run your hand over the area after drying it off to ensure it is completely dry.

  • Squeeze a small amount of scratch remover onto a foam applicator pad. Apply the scratch remover by rubbing it slowly across the area in a circular motion. Work the remover into the scratch by kneading the pad over the area and pushing the remover deep into the scratch.

  • Polish your vehicle with a mild abrasive to finalize the repair. Test the abrasive on a small inconspicuous area of the car before applying it to the scratch to ensure it will not corrode the paint. Apply a dime-sized amount onto a sponge or rag and firmly rub the polish into the car until the scratch is no longer visible.
