Do It Yourself Auto Floor Mats

Car carpets take a beating and can make a car look old before its time if not taken care of. Whether you battle snow or sand, floor mats will preserve your car's carpet. Customized mats are expensive, but there are alternatives if you want to replace old mats.

Things You'll Need

  • Bathtub mat
  • Area rug
  • Plastic runner
  • Tape measure
  • Marker
  • Box cutter
  • Place a bathtub or shower floor mat on the car floor. Wet the suction cups on the back of the plastic. Press the mat firmly to the uncarpeted floor. Mats come in square or oblong sizes and can be bought at home improvement centers or department stores.

  • Select a colored area rug with a rubber backing. Pick rugs made from indoor-outdoor material which can be hosed off when dirty. Rubber backed rugs come in small, rectangular sizes and can be found at home improvement stores and discount stores.

  • Buy a plastic runner from a home improvement center. These can be bought by the foot from large rolls. The plastic has pointed grippers on the back to secure the plastic to carpet. Trace the measurements of the floorboard onto the plastic with a marker and lay the runner on a hard surface, such as plywood. Cut along the guideline with a box cutter.
