How to Remove Glue Safely From Clear Coat Paint

Clear coat is applied over the surface paint on vehicles in order to preserve their appearance and condition. The protective finish is meant to withstand exposure to all weather conditions and minor damage to the vehicle. Glue can often stain the clear coat during messy projects, or after stickers and decals have been removed from the surface. Removing it safely and effectively from the finish requires solvent-based materials and the proper cleaning supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Adhesive remover
  • Microfiber towel
  • Terry cloth
  • Cotton ball
  • Acetone
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Car soap
  • Wax
  • Find a specialized adhesive solvent from the local auto supply store or supermarket. These chemical products intended for dissolving glue and other sticky residue from both interior and exterior automobile surfaces; avoid water-based materials when attempting to lift glue because it can lead to excessive rubbing that damages the clear coat finish.

  • Apply the solution to the affected area on the clear coat paint according to the manufacturers instructions. Common varieties of the product are available in spray bottles and liquid applications, both of which can safely treat automotive paint.

  • Allow the solvent to soak the residue for the time shown on the product label. Use a microfiber towel or terry cloth to gently wipe from glue from the clear coat. A second application may be required to dissolve any stubborn traces of the residue.

  • Dampen a cotton ball with acetone or isopropyl alcohol as an affordable alternative to commercial products. More commonly known as nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol, these household solvents are effective methods of removing glue in small quantities.

  • Dab the glue stain on the clear coat paint with the chemical and wipe it with a clean cloth to check if the residue has softened. Both chemicals dissolve quickly and are not potent enough to penetrate the clear coat in such minimal amounts.

  • Thoroughly clean the treated area with car soap once the glue has been dissolved entirely. Wax the clear coat with a rubbing compound to remove any haze or dullness that the glue may have left behind.
