Homemade Auto Glass Cleaner

It is important to keep your car in top running condition, and it is also important that your vehicle looks good. Auto glass is a vital part of vehicles and should be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid being a safety hazard. There are lots of products on the market that are effective in cleaning automobile glass including homemade products. Homemade glass cleaning agents are usually less expensive than mass produced cleaning solutions, and are used extensively.

Preparation

  • Wash your auto glass first with soap and water; you should clean the entire car at the same time. If you only wash the windshield, you run the risk of dirtying other parts of the car due to spillage from the cleaning solution.

Ammonia Solution

  • Mix 1/2 cup of sudsy ammonia to a pint of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), a gallon of water and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent. You can add this solution to an empty spray bottle and clean your auto glass inside and outside. Another option you might want to try is adding equal parts of rubbing alcohol, ammonia and water to clean your auto glass, this solution is considered effective by users to eliminate streak.

Vinegar, Rubbing Alcohol and Water Solution

  • Combine filtered water, cider vinegar and 70 percent rubbing alcohol concentration and mix the ingredients together. This solution can be added to a spray bottle and then squirted onto your glass to clean. It not only cleans your glass, but leaves your car with a streak free appearance.

Drying

  • Dry your car glass after cleaning with a soft towel, surgical towel or a piece of fabric, anyone of these products will do a good job drying your vehicle. Some people prefer to use surgical towels because they do not leave any lint on the glass, and they are very absorbent. Using microfiber to dry your glass, cleans your car without lint, and acts as a buffing agent that provides shine plus removes any remaining residue. However, it is not as absorbent as towels, and some users prefer to dry with a towel first followed by the microfiber material.

Tip

  • It is important not to clean your car in direct sunlight, and not to clean when your windshield is warm. Label your cleaning product, and store it in a safe area, products such as ammonia are flammable so it is important to exercise caution.
