How to Clean Car Mats With Bad Stains

No matter how hard you try to keep the inside of your car free from stains, sometimes life gets in the way of your ambitions. Whether it's a tipped over cup of coffee or a muddy morning after a night of rain, it's hardly a surprise when you notice dirty and stained floor mats in your car or truck. Many people mistakenly throw these mats in the washer, which can damage the fabric and material, resulting in ragged looking mats. Before you give up and buy new mats, which can be costly, learn how to get those stains out for good.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • Large basin or bathtub
  • Bucket
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush
  • Remove the floor mats from your car. Shake well or vacuum to remove dirt.

  • Fill a basin or bathtub with warm water and enough detergent to create some suds but not a bubble bath. Place mats in the water/detergent solution.

  • Soak the mats for 4 to 12 hours, depending on how dirty they are.

  • Drain the water, and rinse the mats until they are completely free of soap.

  • If there are still visible stains, fill a bucket will warm water. Add ½ cup to 1 cup baking soda.

  • Dip a brush in the baking soda water, and gently scrub the stains on your mats.

  • Rinse well. Place in the sunlight to dry.

  • Once dry, put the mats back in your vehicle.
