How to Polish Aluminum Valve Covers

Are your aluminum valve covers looking dim and dirty? Would you like the make them shine? In this article, we will discuss the easy way to clean and polish valve covers.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel wool
  • Steel brush
  • Lime-cleaning agent
  • Toothbrush
  • Rags
  • Aluminum polish
  • Microfiber rag
  • If the valve covers are not in easy reach, remove them from the motor and place them on clean cloth.

  • Scrub all buildup on the covers using steel wool. Begin in the center and work outward to remove it all and prevent missing spots. To clean thicker buildup, you may have to use a steel brush to scrub the surface.

  • To get into cracks and crevices, soak them with a lime-cleaning agent. Allow the liquid to sit for several minutes, and then scrub it thoroughly with a toothbrush.

  • After finishing cleaning the surface and allowing it to dry, begin applying aluminum polish to the covers with a microfiber rag. Don't be afraid to use plenty of polish, because valve covers are made of more porous aluminum and the polish will soak in.

  • Work the polish around until all residue has disappeared.

  • Rub the entire surface with a very slightly dampened rag to bring out a full shine. Do this as gently as possible so that you don't pull up the polish, but you remove the bits of residue covering it.
