How to Remove Salt Stains From a Car's Carpet

Winter weather brings snow along with an abundance of salt that embeds in the carpet of the car. Don't worry about the carpet being ruined. Follow the techniques below to completely remove the irritating stain.

Shampoo the Carpet

  • Vacuum the stain thoroughly. Try to pick up as much of the salt as possible.

  • Mix a quarter size amount of carpet shampoo with one cup of lukewarm water. Apply solution to the stain with a sponge.

  • Wait for cleaning mixture to dissolve the salt, approximately 20 minutes. Use a dry, clean towel to dab stain. Repeat pressing the clean towel to stain until dry.

  • Rinse with water. Use another clean towel to absorb water from stained area. Continue to use clean towels to absorb the moisture in the carpet. Repeat entire step once more.

Clean with Vinegar and Water

  • Mix 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray on salt stains. Let stand for 15 minutes.

  • Press a clean towel on the stain. When towel becomes saturated, repeat with another dry towel. Allow stained area to dry.

  • Inspect stain. If still visible, repeat Steps 1 and 2. It may be necessary to repeat this technique several times.
