How Do I Remove Pontiac Trim Molding?

Over time, Pontiac trim molding can become unattached or damaged, requiring you to remove the panel in order to replace it with a new panel strip or leave it off for a less-decorative appearance. Removing trim molding from a Pontiac is a relatively simple job that can be completed at your home without any expensive equipment. The most appealing part of this process is that you can complete this task without damaging the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Heat gun
  • Oil-based cleaner
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Interior car door panel pulling tool
  • Old rags
  • Apply heat to the trim molding using the heat gun. You want to focus primarily on the taped area where the trim attaches to the car in order to melt the adhesive. Apply heat for five to 10 minutes to moisten the adhesive.

  • Lift the trim molding away from the car gently and fill the underside with oil-based cleaner. Allow adhesive to absorb the cleaner for five minutes and gently lift off the door panel.

  • Scrape away any remaining adhesive strip with an interior car door panel pulling tool. Avoid scratching the door of the car and insert the panel pulling tool directly into the adhesive strip as you scrape it away.

  • Wipe any remaining adhesive from the door with an old rag soaked with oil-based cleaner. Rub in a circular motion to lift away remaining adhesive.

  • Clean the door with rubbing alcohol. Wipe away any remaining reside with an old rag.
