How to Keep a Car Interior Cool

With temperatures on the rise, keeping your car cool protects the interior of your car from sun and heat and helps your upholstery last longer without fading. Blocking sunlight from your car and keeping it cooler also aids your air conditioner in being more efficient and not working as hard.

Things You'll Need

  • Sunshade
  • Window tint
  • Solar fan
  • Park your car in a shaded area, such as under a parking deck or tree. Avoid direct sunlight whenever you can. If no shade is available, park your car so the sun faces the rear windshield instead of the front. This will keep your dash and steering wheel cooler.

  • Place a sunshade in the front windshield of your car. Sunshades are inexpensive and work well to reduce your car's interior temperature. Blocking rays from the sun also protects your dash from getting too hot and cracking.

  • Tint your windows to the legal limit. Tint acts like sunglasses for your car by filtering the sunlight and blocking harmful ultraviolet rays.

  • Crack your car windows about an inch to allow the heat to escape. As the sun beams in, interior temperatures can exceed outside temps by 20 to 30 degrees. Allowing some of the heat to escape can help keep your car interior cooler.

  • Put a solar fan in your car. Place it on top of the window and the fan will work as long as there is sufficient sunlight. A solar fan can keep your car interior up to 30 degrees cooler in the summer.
