How to Re-Gas an Air Conditioner

Car air conditioners operate using a type of chemical that turns into liquid when compressed. Its sole purpose is to cycle from heat into cool air. When your air conditioner is not producing cold air as desired, you might need to refill the refrigerant, a process also known as re-gassing your air conditioner. You can perform this procedure if you keep a few safety tips in mind.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective goggles and gloves
  • Refrigerant
  • Put on a pair of protective goggles and gloves.

  • Locate your car's service fittings. The service fittings look like an upside-down "T" shape, and you have two: a low and a high one. You can typically find the low fitting on your car's suction hose. The high fitting is usually on the line attaching the condenser and the compressor.

  • Connect your refrigerant can to the service hose after you find the fittings. Twist the top of the can's valve, puncturing the top, then slowly pull out the valve a little. This releases some air away from the hose. Close the valve again and connect the other side of the service hose into the low fitting.

  • Hold the can upright and turn the valve to release refrigerant into the hose.
