How to Adjust the Kickdown Cable on a Cherokee

The kickdown cable, also known as the throttle valve cable, relays the throttle position to the hydraulic "brain" of the transmission. This hydraulic "brain" -- the valve body -- uses the throttle position to help determine the proper transmission function mode. The kickdown feature is an open-throttle down-shift used to gain speed quickly for passing or climbing steep hills. Adjusting the throttle valve cable can restore proper kickdown qualities, and may correct delayed or inconsistent shift points.

Cable Location and Adjustment

  • Place the gear selector of your Cherokee in the "Park" position and turn the ignition off. Open the hood and locate the throttle valve cable; it connects to the throttle pivot lever and travels downward to the transmission. You can differentiate it from other cables that may be attached at the same pivot point since they are not routed toward the transmission.

  • Depress the "D"-shaped metallic button in the cable adjuster housing. Push the cable plunger or conduit into the adjuster housing as far as possible or until you experience hard resistance.

  • Rotate the throttle pivot lever until the throttle is open all the way, then allow the cable to extend to its limit. The cable will ratchet to the correct setting automatically. The adjustment procedure is complete; replace the cable assembly if it fails to respond to adjustment. Close the hood and test drive your Cherokee.
