How to Rebuild Kohler Carburetors

Kohler offers small airflow carburetors for lawn and garden equipment. Lawn and garden carburetors require a rebuild more often than "street" carburetors because of the amount of dust and debris they're subjected to. When your equipment idles rough or refuses to run, install a rebuild kit and clean the carburetors to restore the engine's performance. Kohler sells rebuild kits that include a new squeeze gasket, the primary rebuild component. If the float is damaged, purchase a new one and install before completing the rebuild.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Kohler rebuild kit
  • Carburetor cleaner spray
  • Unscrew the bolt from the rounded bowl on the side of the carburetors. This is the fuel bowl, which contains a gasket and the float valve.

  • Pull the bowl away from the main body and discard the squeeze gasket. Spray the inside of the bowl and the main body to remove any fuel gunk or debris. Inspect the float for proper up-and-down movement. If the float sticks or is visibly damaged, slide it out of the bowl by hand and insert a new float.

  • Place a new squeeze gasket against the main body and push the bowl against the main body. Ensure the gasket remains in line with the shape of the main body's gasket surface area. Install the bowl bolt and tighten it with the wrench.

  • Spray carburetor cleaner spray into all the holes and orifices in the carburetors, accessible through the intake and air-filter ports.
