How to Make Your Own Motorcycle Sissy Bar

A sissy bar is an essential feature of a motorcycle. It is positioned at the back of the bike and is meant to either hold a bag for the driver or give the passenger a support to hold onto for protection while riding on the back of the bike. If your motorcycle is a few years old and has gone through a lot of wear and tear, the sissy bar might need to be replaced. Instead of spending a lot of money to purchase a new one, you can make your own with some tools and mechanical skill.

Things You'll Need

  • Blowtorch
  • One 1/2-inch-by-2-foot steel rod or piping
  • One 1/2-by-6-inch steel rod or piping
  • Vise
  • Use a blowtorch to weld and heat the center of the 1/2-inch-by-2-foot piece of steel piping or rod. This will cause the metal to soften so that you can then bend it at the welded point. Take care not to overheat, because you want to avoid melting it. Weld for two or three minutes and examine the area.

  • Bend the steel piping down so that the welded part is at the very top. It should be an even length on either side and should be in a "V" or "U" shape.

  • Place the steel piece welded end-first into a vise. Bend the metal back at about a 35-degree angle, then remove it from the vise.

  • Position the 1/2-by-6-inch rod or piping horizontally in the middle of the first piece of piping. Place it about four inches from the top, then weld it to either side of the inside of the original piping with the blowtorch.
