How To Remove The Rear End on a Mountaineer

Removing the rear end on a Mercury Mountaineer is necessary when the rear end needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The rear end itself will come out once the shocks and control arms are disconnected. An assistant may be needed to help pull the rear end away from the truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire tool
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Chock the front wheels to prevent the truck from moving forward while it is raised. Place a jack under the rear end.

  • Place jack stands under the shock towers at the rear of the truck. Lower the truck on to the jack stands. Leave the jack under the differential.

  • Unscrew the lug nuts on both rear wheels with a tire tool and take the wheels off. Place the wheels to the side.

  • Locate the four bolts behind the rotor. There will be a series of bolts on both sides of the truck.

  • Unbolt the control arm with a socket wrench. There will be one bolt on each side of the rear end.

  • Unbolt both of the shocks at the bottom. This will make additional room for the rear end to come off.

  • Lower the rear end to the ground. Slide it out from under the truck.
