How to Change the PCV Valve in a Pontiac

Pontiac was a division of GM that was discontinued in 2009. Over the years, GM made a number of Pontiac vehicles, including the Firebird, Bonneville, Sunfire and GTO. Modern Pontiac cars have PCV valves. The PCV (positive crankcase ventiliation) valve helps to regulate the engine's fuel fumes. It's a vital part of the emission-control system, designed to minimize pollution and improve efficiency. Changing the PCV valve is quick and simple no matter what Pontiac vehicle you have.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement PCV valve
  • Familiarize yourself with the PCV valve. The PCV valve is a small, L-shaped tube about three inches long. If you aren't certain what the valve looks like, consider looking at a picture of the valve prior to attempting to locate it in your Pontiac's engine compartment.

  • Shut off the Pontiac's engine and open the hood. If your Pontiac has a plastic engine cover, lift it up to remove it.

  • Locate the PCV valve. You'll find the PCV valve mounted on the intake manifold. On front-wheel drive Pontiac vehicles, this will be directly to the left of the valve cover (on the passenger side of the compartment). On rear-wheel drive Pontiac vehicles, this will be directly behind the valve cover in the back half of the engine compartment.

  • Unplug the vacuum hose from the PCV valve's port. No tools are needed. Simply pull it off to disconnect it.

  • Grasp the Pontiac's PCV valve and firmly pull it upward to remove it. Push the new PCV valve down into the port and plug the vacuum hose into it.
