Mercury Windshield Wiper Problems

A Mercury's windshield wiper system includes more than just the rubber blades. To function properly, a Mercury also must have a functional wiper motor, transmission and arms.

The Motor and Transmission

  • To move properly, wiper blades must be powered by a wiper motor and transmission. Both components are located under the Mercury's hood, towards the rear of the engine compartment. The motor and transmission are connected to the Mercury's wiper arms.

Wiper Arms

  • A Mercury's wiper arms help the motor and transmission move the wiper blades across the windshield. The arms themselves cannot be bent. Also, the arms feature an internal spring that helps keep the blades against the windshield. Over time, this spring can become either corroded or stretched out, and will need to be replaced.

Wiper Blades and Frames

  • The Mercury's wiper arms connect to the wiper blades. The rubber blades themselves are part of a frame. If the blades become dull from use, they will need to be replaced. Often, it is easier just to remove and replace the entire wiper frame assembly. They are widely available at auto parts retailers and most stores selling automotive products.
