How to Read the Casting Numbers on Blocks

The casting number stamped on the block of your vehicle indicates the size of the engine and the model year of the vehicle. The casting number is important if you need to obtain original parts to start a restoration project. The casting number is similar to a serial number, but the sequence of numbers is specific to a particular type of engine and the model year of the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber mat or pad
  • Mirror
  • Wire brush
  • Open the hood of your vehicle and then set the support bar.

  • Find the location of the casting number on the block for your vehicle. This location varies depending on the manufacturer. The casting number for a Chevrolet block is located on the top of the bell housing flange on the driver's side of the engine.

  • Place a rubber mat or pad on the side of the vehicle. This will protect the paint from getting scratched.

  • Position a mirror at the location of the casting number, if the engine is still in the vehicle. Try to adjust the angle of mirror so that you can read the reflection of the numbers.

  • If necessary, clean any dirt and grease from the casting numbers with a small wire brush or toothbrush.
