How to Open a 1989 Corvette Car Hood If the Latch Is Broken?

The 1989 Chevrolet Corvette is equipped with a one-piece fiberglass hood that lifts up from the rear edge toward the front of the car. There's a latch on each rear corner of the hood. The latches are normally operated with a cable attached to a lever under the dash. If this cable breaks, the hood is difficult to release without the assistance of a hood release tool, which is available from Corvette parts suppliers.

Things You'll Need

  • Corvette hood opening tool
  • Open the driver's door and position yourself between the door and the car.

  • Insert the small end of the hood opening tool between the hood and the door hinge pillar, making sure the tip of the tool is pointing up.

  • Rotate the handle of the tool 180 degrees to the right or clockwise. This will position the tool tip next to the latch lever.

  • Push the tip of the tool to the right, moving the latch to the center of the car.

  • Lift the hood with your left hand while removing the tool with your right hand. Continue lifting the hood to the fully open position and secure with the hood support rod.
