How to Replace the Ignition Switch in a 1992 Honda Civic

The 1992 Honda Civic uses an electronic ignition switch to distribute electrical power to the starter. Once the starter receives the current, the starter engages the flywheel to start the car. A faulty ignition switch will prevent the car from starting and will need to be replaced. Fortunately, the ignition switch on a 1995 Honda Civic is easy to access and replacing it will only take a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the hood of your Honda Civic and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery by loosening the securing nut with a socket wrench. This will cut the electrical power to the vehicle while you are working on the ignition switch. Place the negative battery cable on a dry towel or rag so it does not touch bare metal and cause a short.

  • Unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the steering wheel shroud with a Phillips screwdriver. Separate the bottom portion of the steering wheel shroud from the top. Pull the shroud down and place it off to the side.

  • Find the ignition switch on the steering shaft. It is located by the ignition cylinder and held in place by two screws.

  • Unscrew the two screws holding the ignition switch in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Disconnect the wiring harness at the back by hand. Push in the locking tab and pull the harness out.

  • Pull the old switch out and replace it with the new one. Fasten the switch in place using the two screws you just removed from the old switch.

  • Push in the wiring harness until it locks in place.

  • Reposition the shroud under the steering column and reinstall the Phillips screws, ensuring that the lower shroud is flush with the top shroud.

  • Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery and tighten with a socket wrench. Close the hood of the car.

  • Start the car to ensure that the ignition switch is installed correctly and sending the required current to the starter solenoid. Turn the car off when done.
