How to Check Transmission Fluid in 2002 Land Rover

Transmission fluid lubricates and cools your Land Rover's transmission and allows it to keep functioning after long periods of time and use. Having the proper amount of transmission fluid is extremely important in maintaining the health of your vehicle's transmission. Having too little fluid can cause your transmission to wear extremely quickly, while having too much fluid can cause too much pressure to develop within the transmission housing, which can also lead to damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towel or rag
  • Start your Land Rover and go for a 10-minute drive. If this isn't possible, let the vehicle idle for 10 minutes.

  • Park your Rover on a flat surface. It is very important that the vehicle isn't on an incline.

  • Turn off the vehicle and climb out of the cab. Open the hood and secure it with the lift bar.

  • Locate the transmission fluid dipstick handle in the rear of the engine compartment. The handle should be yellow and labeled.

  • Pull the transmission dipstick out of the tube. Wipe off the dipstick with a paper towel or a rag.

  • Slide the dipstick back into the tube and press it all the way down. Gently lift it back out of the shaft and tilt it horizontally. Check the fluid level on the side of the dipstick. If the level registers between the empty and full marks on the dipstick, the fluid level is fine. If the level falls outside of either mark, you need to add or drain transmission fluid.
