How to Reset the Oil Change Warning in a Lancer

Introduced in 1973, the Mitsubishi Lancer did not employ an oil change warning indicator for models in the United States until 2006. Based on the Dodge/Chrysler models, the Japanese vehicle was imported. Resetting the light after an oil change service was required to stop the light from illuminating on the instrument panel. The Lancer uses a small blinking wrench icon to display that it is time to change the oil. Resetting the light is required to properly allow the correct mileage/months to pass before the next service is due and the light illuminates again.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position without starting the engine.

  • Press the button to the left of the display on the instrument panel twice within one second. The oil life status will be displayed on the panel -- this should be past the mileage due for the service interval if the wrench icon is illuminated.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position within 10 seconds of the status display.

  • Press and hold the button to the left of the display again with one hand while turning the ignition key back to the "ON" position without starting the engine. The oil life status will show once again.

  • Continue to hold down the button for a few seconds longer, and then release it. Wait 10 seconds until a chime indicates and displays 6,000 miles for at least another 10 seconds. The oil life warning light has then been reset. Turn the ignition key to "OFF".

  • Start the engine of the Lancer to inspect the instrument panel and ensure the wrench icon is no longer illuminated on the instrument panel. Repeat the procedure if the wrench still is illuminated.
