How to Drain Torque Converter Fluid

Among its numerous functions the torque converter drives the hydraulic control system's oil pump and increases the torque produced by the engine, which it then transfers to your vehicle's transmission. Furthermore, it is filled with transmission fluid. Conventional wisdom holds that you wouldn't drain the fluid in the torque converter while you're changing your transmission fluid, that is unless you wanted to replace the torque converter fluid as well.

  • Remove the converter dust cover or access panel to reveal the converter-flywheel bolts. On some models you must first rotate the crankshaft by rotating the pulley nut at the front of the crankshaft with a big breaker bar and socket. Locate the drain plug, which should be at the 6 o'clock position.

  • Slide a drain pan underneath the plug, then remove the plug to allow the fluid to drain into the pan.

  • Replace the drain plug, and tighten to the torque requirements outlined in your owner's manual.

  • Recruit the help of two partners to help you pull this job off.

  • Change the fluid in the sump pan, then disconnect the return line between the radiator's transmission cooler part and the transmission, itself. Flexible lines should disconnected from the transmission, while non-flexible lines should be disconnected from the cooler. Use a quick-connect fittings removal tool. Be careful while doing this as there are two lines running from the cooler part to the transmission: consult the owner's manual to determine which is the return line.

  • Take a hose and attach it to either the flexible line or the cooler fitting, holding the other end of the hose into a large, clear container. Have one partner start the engine, as your other partner monitors the level of the fluid draining into the container. Meanwhile, you will be pouring fresh fluid. In some models, this will only work if the car is in "drive". To execute this, tell your partner to shift gears, while engaging the emergency brake and holding down the brake pedal. Once you notice only fresh fluid going into the container, shut down the engine.

  • Reconnect the cooler line, and refill the transmission.
